How Geolocation Works in Shyfter?

📍 How Geolocation Works in Shyfter

Shyfter uses geolocation to verify a collaborator’s position during specific actions — such as clock-ins. This system relies entirely on the user’s device to determine their location; it does not use any proprietary hardware or networks from Shyfter.

🛰️ What determines your location?

The accuracy of the location data depends on several technical factors:

  • GPS: Primary method for precise outdoor positioning.
  • Wi-Fi networks: Help improve accuracy, especially indoors.
  • Mobile data (3G/4G/5G): Used when GPS is unavailable or disabled.
  • Device settings: If location permissions aren’t granted, Shyfter won’t be able to retrieve your location.

ℹ️ Note: Shyfter does not track users in real time. Your position is requested only at the time of specific actions (e.g., clocking in) and only if you’ve granted permission.

🔐 Privacy & user control

Every collaborator remains in full control of their location settings:

  • They can deny location access at any time in their phone settings.
  • If location is disabled, the requested action may fail (e.g., clock-in not accepted if geolocation is required).
  • Shyfter does not store any live tracking or continuous location history.

✅ Is it mandatory?

No. Geolocation in Shyfter is entirely optional:

  • Companies may choose to require location as part of clock-in validation.
  • Collaborators may refuse access to their position — although this might block some actions based on the employer's rules.

❌ Why we removed the “Troubleshoot Missing Location” article

Most location issues are caused by the phone’s operating system or settings. Instead of maintaining a separate article, we recommend the following steps:

  • Check the location permissions for the Shyfter app.
  • Make sure GPS is enabled and the device has a clear signal (ideally outdoors).
  • Force-close and reopen the app if needed.
